Southington exhibition to reward artists with disabilities

SOUTHINGTON — Three years ago, Carole Milano’s older sister, Kathleen Sena, died at 68. Milano often finds herself reminiscing about their younger days, which she was in charge of taking care of Sena after school.

To honor her sister’s memory, Milano has become the driving force behind an exhibition for artists with disabilities.

Artists from Southington and other towns will have their work displayed on Aug. 9 in a gallery at Paris in Plantsville. Judges will look over the work and cash prizes will be given for first, second, and third place.

The Southington Arts Council will be accepting work from 1 to 6 p.m. Aug. 9 at Paris in Plantsville Gallery on 15 W. Main St. Winners will be announced on Aug. 10. The first-place work gets $300, second place $200 and third place $100.

An Empathy Video That Asks You To Stand in Someone Else’s Shoes | On Being

These words end this incredibly beautiful video produced by the Cleveland Clinic, a nonprofit medical center that integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education. We spend quite a bit of effort here at On Being focusing on the sound of the human voice and how each guest adds to our collective discussion. We attempt to draw out the best of their stories and experiences in all its messiness and glory. This video speaks to each person’s complexity, the stories that go unsaid but float just beneath the surface.

Meet The Press host David Gregory misrepresented the Affordable Care Act’s “medicare surtax” to suggest that it will be felt by “anybody who gets a paycheck in this country,” though the provisions will only affect individuals with an annual income above $200,000.

Beginning with 2013 tax returns, new tax provisions included in the Affordable Care Act will begin to take effect. Though most Americans will only see a tax increase if they decide to forgo health coverage, some changes designed to increase fairness in Medicare funding will begin to affect the wealthiest Americans.

The state has launched a website and media campaign to increase awareness about the choices Connecticut residents have for receiving long-term care and the career options for caregivers.

The campaign, called My Place CT, is part of an effort to expand the ability of seniors and people with disabilities to live in communities, rather than institutional settings like nursing homes. The move to reshape the state’s long-term care system also includes trying to help the nursing home industry broaden its business model to serve the needs of people living outside their facilities.
